The above photograph of Evelina, Oakes and Susan Ames (soon to become Mrs. Henry W. French) was taken around 1860.  Susie would have been the only child still at home with her parents and was probably engaged at this point. By this time, Evelina and Oakes were grandparents.

One note about the above photograph: a costume historian who looked at the image said that the clothes worn by the family suggest mourning attire.  If so, the mourning would have been for the recent loss of an infant grandson named Oakes, the second child born to Catherine Hobart and Oakes Angier Ames.

This image of Evelina may be from the 1860’s, when Oakes was a Congressman in Washington:

The image below shows Evelina Ames later in life, perhaps in the late 1870’s, when she had been widowed for several years.

  1. Abraham Puchall – I haven’t seen an image of John Ames Mitchell’s wife, but we have a collection of photographs that we’re just going through now. If we find something I’ll post it and/or let you know. Thank you!

  2. I am also very interested in photographs of John Mitchell’s wife. Did you find any? Thank you.

    • Terry McManus – I have not come across an image of John Ames Mitchell’s wife. Many family photographs are held in the archives at Stonehill College in Easton, MA. The archivist there is Nicole Casper, so you might contact her.Thank you.
